Katrina Kaif's Sleepless Nights In Spain

Those Bollywood aspirants who turn dreamy-eyed at the sight of actors giving away autographs to their fans or mouthing flamboyant award acceptance speeches, here’s an eye opener.

Beneath the gloss and glam of the profession lies the brutal reality of long and gruelling shooting schedules at most odd hours.

Ask Katrina Kaif, who hasn’t exactly been in the pink of her health lately. She’s in Spain shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and the odd shooting hours have already begun to take a toll on her health.

In Katrina’s own words, the film’s cast and crew has been shooting from 4 pm to 6 am every day. And the sleepless nights and slumberous days have sapped all vivacity out of the pretty babe.

If that’s not enough, Katrina is also required to shoot the stunts.

I Have No Plans To Direct A Film-Resul Pookutty

Oscar-winning film technician Resul Pookutty Wednesday said he has no plans of directing a film.

"I have no plans to direct a Malayalam film. I will continue to do the job I know the best and there will be no change in my profession," Pookutty told reporters here.

Pookutty along with Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for "Slumdog Millionaire" last year.

This year he has been invited to be on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the roster of voting members. He is among 135 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

"This shows that Asian talent is getting wider recognition and that is a great achievement," said Pookutty.

Pookutty, 37, who hails from Anchal, about 50 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, is currently busy dubbing and mixing sound for "Endhiran", a Tamil science-fiction film directed by S. Shankar.

The film stars Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles.

Salman Khan Refused To Watch Raavan For Aishwarya Rai

Salman Khan gave 'Raavan' a miss, even as the crew members of his film 'Ready' in Sri Lanka took off to see the latest Mani Ratnam movie.

Salman was also asked to accompany the excited group of actors and technicians.

"Initially, Salman did show interest in the film. But when it was time to accompany the rest of the unit, Salman opted out because of the controversial nature of the subject and also the fact that he has earned the wrath of the Tamilians by endorsing and visiting Sri Lanka twice in a month," says a source.

More importantly, Raavan is worshipped by certain sections of the Sri Lankan people and the film raised a controversy when released in the country.

Understandably, Salman was advised against accompanying his friends for the movie.

Mahesh Manjrekar, who is shooting with Salman in Sri Lanka, confirms the fact that the actor did not accompany him and others who went to see the movie Saturday after pack-up.

"I went with my friends and it went very peacefully. I had also heard that the Sri Lankans were offended by the way Raavan was depicted. But there were 500 people in the theatre and they watched in rapt attention," he said.

Edinburgh University Students Working With Pankaj Kapoor

Students from Edinburgh Napier University's Screen Academy in Scotland are currently working with an Indian film crew for the shooting of "Mausam", which stars actor Shahid Kapoor and is directed by his father, Pankaj Kapoor.

The shooting of the movie, in which Pankaj Kapoor debuts as director, was delayed for over a month in May because of the ash clouds following a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

The Edinburgh City Chambers threw a reception for the team and the Napier students to celebrate the collaboration, according to the New Scotsman newspaper.

Councillor Steve Cardownie said on the occasion: "It's very fitting that Scotland's capital should be at the centre of new and better connections between our filmmakers and those from other nations."

The Scottish government recently launched its India plan to encourage links between India and Scotland. As part of an exchange programme, a group of Napier students have already visited Kolkata to work on a script they had written under the programme.

The exchange with the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) was designed to reflect the different working traditions of the two countries. During a first trip last November, two staff and four students worked with students at the SRFTI to make the short film "Tuki", which was written by Napier student Gayle Baird and featured Bengali actors.

Four SRFTI students are now in Edinburgh to help work on "Mausam", about an Indian boy who leaves his life - and girlfriend - in Scotland to fight in the Indian Air Force during the Kargil war with Pakistan. Filming is currently taking place at various locations across Edinburgh, including Portobello Cemetery and Colinton.

Robin MacPherson, director of Screen Academy Scotland, said: "The connection we established on our first visit to Kolkata in November 2008 has blossomed into an exciting creative collaboration between Scotland and West Bengal where we are able to share ideas."

A Girl Fan Bit Imran Khan’s Hand

Despite two box office turkeys on a trot, Imran Khan continues to be a heartthrob among his female fans. This was more than evident at a nightclub in Dubai where Imran visited to promote his upcoming movie I Hate Luv Storys during the weekend.

After stepping out of the club, the actor was shaking hands with his fans. That’s when a crazed female fan shook his hand, but wouldn’t let go of it. Initially, Imran did not mind. But she kept holding Imran’s hand, and when the security intervened and tried to take her away, the girl did something shocking.

She bit Imran’s hand. Yes, the girl sank her teeth into Imran’s flesh. The actor yelled in pain and that’s when the security guards used force to pull the girl away from Imran.

From what we hear, the girl was obsessed with Imran and wanted to kiss his hand. But she got angry when security intervened. That’s when the kiss turned into a bite.

Ouch! We sympathize with Imran.

Kareena Kapoor Would Call For Hyderabadi Biryani

Hi da hi my hot dimsums! How goes it in your duniya? It's going easy in mine, thanks to the bheegi bheegi rut, courtesy the baraste baadal. So here I am, chilling in my penthouse while the rest of the city goes through its daily hustle and bustle, ready to serve you some of the chatpati news from tinsel town. Here you go...

For starters, I've some really interesting dope on Kareena Kapoor. The lissome lass who made headlines with her size zero figure that even inspired a series of laptops, is not exactly fastidious about her diet.

I'm informed that the Kapoor kudi who maintains her svelte figure with power yoga, does skip her diet once in a while. Like she did recently, when she was filming Golmaal 3 in Hyderabad. Kyun? Kyunki she couldn't resist the local biryani, for it was on top of her crave list.

According to my khabru, post pack-up, Bebo would call for the authentic Hyderabadi biryani so she could indulge herself... without feeling any guilt or remorse.

And why not? I'm told the actress never compromised on her power yoga and kasratbaazi even for once. She would reach the hotel gym before the crack of dawn to do her surya-namaskars and all that. Kewl! No wonder the Kapoor kudi is looking sizzling like never before. Lagi raho Bebo, I tell you.

Katrina Kaif Cleaned Her Own Toilet

Since she is the current reigning Bollywood princess, everyone has only nice things to say about her. But this little story is still worth telling.

Apparently, Kat who travelled to some small time village a couple of months ago for her charity work surprised the locals when she was most non-fussy about the toilet she used.

It seems the locals were embarrassed with their modest facilities and thought that a superstar like Kat would hesitate to use their loo. But the actress just cleaned the loo on her own and used it without a fuss.

She even remembered to thank the village folk for letting her use their toilet. Nice to know Kat still has a reality check going.

We know of one Bengali siren who actually threw a fit in some far out location and had her producer pulling his own hair out in sheer frustration because of her unreasonable demands.

Sachin Tendulkar Will Titled As The New Hair Style Icon

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar's looking different these days. The stylish new hair do that he sported in the stands during the Wimbledon match between Serena Williams and Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova on Saturday is getting thumbs up from the hairstyle experts, though they make it clear that his crop of wavy, thick hair is thanks to some cool styling and not hair weaving or transplant.

"It's a textured cut where lots of wax has been used. He's certainly not got a transplant done as he is gifted with naturally good hair texture," said stylist Jawed Habib. According to Shanti of Hair n Shanti, "To add volume to his hair, Sachin seems to have used styling gel that also gives the illusion of straight and neat hair."

"I cannot even believe how good Sachin looks. He has used a product to tame the frizz n dry curls," said stylist Sapna Bhavnani. "It cud be retexturing, like temporary rebonding meant to smoothen the hair. With such styling, one doesn't have to apply gel everyday," said hair expert Simi Ghai.

Sachin's fans, however, seem least bothered about the technicalities and are raving about the look. "He looks 10 years younger," says Smriti Mehta, 21. "The style is going to be a hit with all youngsters as it is short and smart," said Jay Aggarwal, 32. "He should be titled as the new style icon," said Arpita Gulati, 22.

England's Cricket Grounds Opened Doors To Bollywood

Three of England's top cricket grounds have opened their doors to Bollywood for the first time. The Oval and Lord's in London and Trent Bridge in Nottingham will be the locations for Akshay Kumar's Patiala House. The film will release post Diwali, alongside Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows.

The movie is set entirely in London and revolves around a cross-generation conflict within an immigrant Punjabi family that lives in Patiala House in Southall. The son, Gattu (Akshay Kumar), wants to be a bowler for the England cricket team, while his family completely opposes the idea.

"We have two Test matches in the film," informs Bhushan Kumar, chairman of T-Series, who is producing the Rs 50 crore film with Mukesh Talreja. "It wasn't difficult getting permission to shoot in these legendary cricketing grounds. You don't have to pull strings or go through the bureaucratic hurdles that you usually face when shooting in India. Filming in England is a cakewalk, it just takes time to get the permits in order."

Bhushan Kumar applied for the permissions three to four months ago. "We completed a 14-day shoot at The Oval, part of which was shot at night," he informs. Kumar's friends who are professional cricketers coached him in the intricacies of bowling prior to the shoot. These included former Pakistani captain and fast bowler Wasim Akram.

A professional cricketer was on the sets to ensure that director Nikhil Advani was following the rules of the gentleman's game to the T. Akshay Kumar is a natural cricketer who has played matches at IIFA and bowls to his son, Aarav.

Twelve professional cricketers will make an appearance in the movie with him. These include West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs, Australia's Andrew Symonds, Simon Katich and Dirk Nannes, Pakistan's Kamran Akmal, England's Nasser Hussain, Graham Gooch, Graeme Hick and Alex Tudor. Commentators Alan Wilkins, Sanjay Manjrekar and Nikhil Chopra are also a part of the cast.

"We wanted the matches to look authentic. People should feel that an actual cricket match is in progress, which is why we roped in so many cricketers," points out Bhushan Kumar. "It was very difficult because they had to take permission from their Cricket Boards. Unfortunately, even though we were in talks with MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, they could not get permission from the BCCI."

Sanjay Dutt's Lamhaa Is Facing Censor Trouble

It was a chance remark by a Kashmiri student describing Kashmir as a "beautiful prison" that set filmmaker Rahul Dholakia thinking, and led to the making of his ’Lamhaa’. The film, releasing July 16, is facing censor trouble over certain dialogues.

Dholakia, who won the National Award for his ’Parzania’ (2005), says he took the decision to make ’Lamhaa’ after meeting a few Kashmiri students.

"The reason why I decided to make a film on the valley was that during one of the screenings of ’Parzania’, I met a few Kashmiri students. They said Kashmir is a beautiful prison. That’s something that caught my attention," Dholakia said.

’Lamhaa’, a film that deals with the life of Kashmiris in the valley, has fallen into the censor net many times.

The director says he is irritated with the way the film body functions.

Initially, it was reported that the censor board rejected the promo of the film and the filmmakers had to approach the revising committee.

Then the board demanded deletions of words - like "sabse" from the dialogue "duniya ki sabse khatarnak jagah Kashmir" (the world’s most dangerous place Kashmir) and also "farji" from "farji elections" (bogus elections).

"When troubles like these happen, one gets irritated, angry, annoyed, frustrated on the hypocrisy and multiple standards that our government and our censor board have," he said.

"Either you fight that or you live with that. If you want to live with that then you should not make films like ’Lamhaa’. But if you want to make a film like ’Lamhaa’, be prepared for it and that’s what we are doing," he added.

Dholakia who earlier made ’Parzania’, a film against the backdrop of the Gujarat riots, said that when you make sensitive films you have to be ready to deal with problems.

"From ’Parzania’ I’ve learnt that the moment you get into a film with a sensitive topic, you should expect trouble."

"That was one of the main reasons for making ’Lamhaa’ as a commercial venture with big stars and a big production house so that even if something happens, eventually the film will get picked by someone and be released."

’Lamhaa’ stars Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt, Kunal Kapoor and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles.

Why did he choose Bipasha to play a Kashmiri girl, even though her look is very unlike one?

"There were many reasons to cast Bipasha in that role. I needed someone who could give time, who could battle both internal and external conflicts of the character and someone who was brave enough to come to the valley and shoot. She was the one who did that," he revealed.

Apart from ’Lamhaa’, Dholakia is working on a film called ’Society’ which stars Dimple Kapadia, Om Puri, Seema Biswas and Paresh Rawal, among others.

"We finished shooting in April. It is a satire on society…It is a less stressful, lighter, hopefully non-controversial film," he informed.

The director is also working on a legal drama, which is being produced by B.R. Films.(IANS)

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has purchased a plot of agricultural land in Kakori area on the outskirts of Lucknow, an official confirmed Sunday.

While the deal was kept under wraps and Amitabh Bachchan got the transaction carried out through a power of attorney, the seller of the land spilled the beans to a TV channel Sunday.

"Amitabh Bachchan has purchased 2.4 hectares of land in Muzaffarnagar village of Kakori; while part of the land is in the joint name of his wife and himself, another plot was purchased in the name of his son Abhishek," C.N. Dikshit, the owner of the land, told IANS.

The land was registered in the name of Dikshit's wife Suman, who transferred 2.4 hectares to Amitabh Bachchan for Rs.1.55 crore.

Yet another plot measuring about 2.3 hectares was purchased in the name of Abhishek Bachchan from Nageshwar Mahadev Cooperative Housing Society in the same village.

Film The Descent 2 Director To Direct Saif Ali Khan

There’s something quite English about the Junior Nawab of Pataudi Saif Ali Khan. Not only did he study at Oxford, he has always had a weakness for everything British. Now, it seems, the British are reciprocating. Jon Harris director of the film The Descent 2 and renowned editor of half a dozen films like The Pond, Eden Lake, Stardust, Snatch, Kick-Ass and soon to be release X-Men: First Class has a unique relationship with Bollywood.

Jon Harris had edited the critically acclaimed film Being Cyrus directed by Homi Adajania with Saif. Recently, while giving interviews for the promotion of the film The Descent 2 he was asked a question about one actor with whom he would like to work with and why.

To this Jon Harris quickly replied “Saif Ali Khan. I haven’t met him but I loved his role in a film for which I was an editor. The film is called Being Cyrus and my friend Homi told me that it was a critically-acclaimed movie in India. I am looking forward to work with the actor if I get an opportunity.”

When asked about Saif, Jon says, “Saif has this unique feature he can look young, at the same time mature. I would have loved to cast him in this horror film, but apparently the story had no male actors in a prominent role and it was a sequel so there has to be a continuation. I look at him as the Wolverine ie., Hugh Jackman of India and am really looking forward to direct him as soon as I get a green signal for my next projects as director.”

Asin And Dhoni Catch Up With Each Other In Sri Lanka

Bollywood and cricket link-ups blossom into raging love affairs often. Are MS Dhoni and Asin headed the same way?

Mumbai Mirror carried a story (Indoor Cricket) that India’s cricket captain MS Dhoni visited Asin’s house at Lokhandwala to watch the semi-final match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.

Dhoni had reached Asin’s house in the evening just before the first ball was played and had stayed there till the match ended. Recently, Dhoni went to Asin’s apartment again and was there with her for about an hour and a half.

A source says, “Just before he left for the Asia Cup series in Sri Lanka (which began on June 15, 2010), he visited Asin’s house in Lokhandwala. This time, the two of them were not watching a match but just chilling out.”

Dhoni and Asin worked together on two commercials last year and since then they’ve been frequently in touch. They get along like a house on fire. The South Indian film industry is already speculating that they are a couple. Despite several attempts, Asin remained unavailable for comment.

Interestingly, soon after Dhoni’s latest visit to Asin’s residence, both of them landed up in Sri Lanka. While Dhoni was leading his team at the Asia Cup, Asin was busy working with Salman Khan in Anees Bazmee’s Ready. Did Asin and Dhoni catch up with each other in Sri Lanka as well? We’re not sure. But watch this space for more...

The Economics Of Bollywood Has Gone Horribly Wrong

Okay, so we are jumping our gun! But it is not without good reason. Bollywood’s now become an over-used cemetery with umpteen films being buried Friday after Friday. And since the inhabitants of this ghost town (the filmmakers) refuse to face reality, the point has to be driven home hard.

“If Bollywood lost Rs.200 crore on the 70 odd releases in the first quarter, then it is set to lose at least Rs.250 crore in the second quarter,’’ says trade consultant Amod Mehra. There will be approximately 125 releases in the next 6 months.

Amod estimates that between Kites and Raavan alone the industry will reportedly lose Rs.100 crore. “Honestly, what are we doing here? Are we peddling dreams or selling nightmares,’’ asks trade guru Taran Adarsh.

Taran says the economics of Bollywood has gone so horribly wrong in the last couple of years that profits for the film corporations are a mere pittance as compared to gigantic losses they make. Estimates show that in the case of today’s most celebrated hit Raajneeti , the profits would amount to around Rs. 10 crores (on the higher side). “But when it comes to losses, the same corporation that released Raajneeti lost something to the tune of Rs.70 odd crore on Ashutosh Gowarikar’s What’s Your Raashee and Karan Johar’s Kurbaan ,’’ says an insider. “That’s how skewed the balance is or rather the film corporations balance-sheets are.’’

Why go far, in the April-June period, there have been a dozen disasters including Paathshaala, City of Gold, Badmaash Company, It’s A Wonderful After Life, Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, Kites and Phoonk-2. And there have been two films that are on the plus side. Of which Housefull managed to sail home and Raajneeti will earn some profits. In the near bleak picture one bright light has emerged, though. Ranbir Kapoor has jumped up in the superstar’s hierarchy having pulled off Raajneeti on his charisma. Trade sources now see Ranbir safely ensconced in the Top-5 Bollywood superstars list.

Says a producer, “You can put Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh at No 1, Hrithik Roshan at No 2 ( Kites is a disaster but Hrithik’s magnetism got the film an opening weekend collection of Rs.30.5 crore), Ranbir Kapoor is No 3 (two hits, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Raajneeti ), Akshay Kumar is No 4 ( Housefull saved him) and Salman Khan is No 5 (the accolades for Wanted continue).

As for the heroines, it is still a fight between Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor. Kareena had 25 minutes in 3 Idiots , the biggest hit in Bollywood history, while Katrina with 10 hits had an equal footage in Bollywood’s latest hit Raajneeti . For the rest of Bollywood... their films and their own positions are currently lost in translation.”

The Clash Between Amitabh Bachchan And Mani Ratnam

When Amitabh Bachchan cribbed about the poor editing of Mani Ratnam’s movie Raavan on his blog, it certainly did no good to the movie which was already getting a severe beating from the critics.

Cinematographer Santosh Sivan and actor Vikram had quickly jumped to Ratnam’s defence by saying it’s a director’s prerogative to decide how the characters should be depicted. Mani Ratnam had kept quiet till now, but now he’s learnt to have spoken his mind to a Tamil weekly.

“That is his (Amitabh’s) opinion. I am not bothered about it. And I am not here in the industry to get marks from Amitabh Bachchan. We have made a film after two years of hard work. Anyone can comment on it,” Ratnam is quoted as saying by the weekly.

In his remarks after the film’s release, Big B had lamented the poor editing which had affected his son’s performance in the movie.

“Lot of merited film edited out, causing inconsistent performance and narrative,” Big B had written.

The superstar had later clarified that he has immense respect for Ratnam.

John Abraham To Make A FIFA World Cup Film

Actor John Abraham, a football lover, admits that he wants to make a film on every conceivable sport in the world.

"I've worked on a football movie, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (2007), which didn't get the response it deserved, probably because we set it in Southall and not in India. But, I completely relish the idea of exploring victory, angst, jealousy and loss on a sports field. I want to show that these words have different connotations when you look at them with respect to sports," says Abraham, who agreed to work for a lesser fee for Abbas Tyrewala's 1-800-Love and take a cut in the film's subsequent profits.

The actor doesn't have a staff-driven line-production company right now, but when he's ready with one, he wants to make entertaining movies.

"I don't want to make pseudo cinema to prove to the world that I understand it. I hate being pretentious. I'll produce projects in which I can also act," say Abraham with a laugh, pointing out that his football movie would be as entertaining as Hollywood flicks Escape To Victory (1981) and Remember The Titans (2000).

"They gave the viewers goosebumps. That's what makes a sports film so special," he says.

Would he become a part of Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's Football Premier League when it launches? Abraham says, "I appreciate their gesture because it's noble. I know that Sanjay Dutt has also pledged his support. I'll be more than happy to help them whenever they need me."

Abraham says he hasn't missed a single football match from the FIFA World Cup so far. "I hope Argentina wins. Their coach, Diego Maradona, one of my favourite footballers, has pledged to dance naked on the streets of Buenos Aires if they do. I can't be in that city, but it'll be a sight for sure," says the actor.

Celina Jaitely Reveals Some Tips For This Monsoon Season

Everyone has heard of Celina Jaitely, the hot bombshell of Bollywood. She is the one of the B-town style icons because of her vivacious hair and captivating eyes.

Till date, she has not given any blockbuster hit, but she is a popular actress. This appealing celeb is admired among girls, who follow her mainly to know the secrets of her beautiful, flowing tresses. Celina reveals some tips for this monsoon season.

Hair: Oil your hair once during this season, as it tends to get oily. But don’t let it get wet because of pollution in the rain water, which contains many harmful pollutants. So, one should always tie their hair.

Wear Boots: During the rains, it’s always good to say Bye Bye to glittery chappals and heels, and opt for boots or rubber slippers. Leather is a big no-no in the rains. And one should always wear a rainy pair, which has a back strap. Gumboots are the best buy this season, as they help in avoiding contact with dirty water.

Towel: Carry two–three towels in your hand bag to keep yourself dry, but don’t forget to wash it.

Shorts: How to make moms happy? Wear shorts and knee-length dresses so that you don’t soil your pants, especially jeans and Indian wear. Plus, it gives you a different look. I suggest nice shorts with full-sleeved T-shirts. I love them!

Bags: It is advisable to carry big plastic bags during the rains to wrap your umbrella or raincoat. After all, you would not want to be stranded in the rains without one. Keep your nice velvet bags for other occasions. Stick to plastic during the rains.

Vivek Oberoi Building A School For Children Of Ex-LTTE Combatants

Vivek Oberoi has just wrapped up a hectic schedule of Ram Gopal Varma's Hindi-Telugu bilingual, Rakta Charitra. And he is preparing to fly down to his school in Vrindavan that not only educates 1,500 girls from families below the poverty line, but even offers them free meals.

"We have also set up filteration plants in the villages so these children don't have to walk miles for a pot of undrinkable water," informs the actor, who hopes that the number of students will double by next year.

Oberoi, who was in Colombo for the IIFA gala earlier this month, is also building a school there for the children of ex-LTTE combatants. He saw 70-odd children, whose little village near the front line had been completely destroyed in the civil war, studying under a mango tree. And decided to give them a school.

The star has been actively canvassing for corporate support since and has managed to bring the UNICEF on board. "The school will stand for hope and peace, it will be a window to the future for these children," he says, adding that he hopes to have the first phase catering to 300-odd children, operational by the year-end. Eventually, the school will benefit around 1,000 students.

The actor was present at a mass wedding of Tamil rebels. Fifty-three couples were issued marriage certificates in the northern district of Vavuniya, where they are in military custody following the defeat of the Tamil Tiger separatist movement in May last year.

Oberoi was a witness for one of the couples, and says that for Viktalis and Rathi Devi, legalising their union after three years was a dream come true.

"The bride had tears in her eyes as she told me that earlier, combatants were not allowed to marry and peace was only a dream," informs Oberoi. When he asked her what was the first thing she'd do now, she blushed and blurted out, "Have babies." Maybe her babies will go to his school too.

Bollywood To Honour Sachin Tendulkar's IAF Post

Ever since Sachin Tendulkar added a new feather to his illustrious cap - that of being conferred the honourary rank of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force, congratulations from the celebrity brigade haven't stopped pouring in.

Congrats

"Sachin is the greatest role model. Who could have been a better choice?" said cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu. "He deserves every bit of this honour," said anchor Mandira Bedi.

On choosing Sachin for the honour, Wg Cdr Tarun Kumar Singha, Public Relations Officer, Indian Air Force said, "It is our way of acknowledging this great sporting icon." Sachin responded, "I'll do my best to be a brand ambassador for the IAF."

However, the fact that Sachin has become the first person totally unconnected to the field of aviation, to be granted an honourary rank in the IAF since the practice was started in 1944, hasn't gone down too well with everyone.

An air force officer, not wanting to be named, said, "What has Sachin done for the Air Force to deserve the rank? He is a great player but celebrities should not be mixed with armed forces."

Abhishek Bachchan's Stunt Has Gone Silent All Of A Sudden

News about a diving champion who claimed to have performed Abhishek Bachchan's death-defying stunt in Raavan, has gone silent all of a sudden. The diver, MS Balram, in an interviwe, said that the much talked about stunt, where Abhishek was seen diving off an 80-ft high cliff, was actually done by him.

Balram says, "I was a part of a team of professional divers hired by the crew of Raavan. I'm not saying a word about Abhishek."

This sudden change in his statement makes one wonder if the entire issue was a publicity gimmick. Balram defends, "I am a diving instructor and I am having trouble focussing on my classes since the past four days. I'm not objecting now. I wish the film's team well."

Right or wrong?

While the Bachchans, both Amitabh and Abhishek, haven't spoken about the matter, debates are raging all over the blogosphere about who's telling the truth.

While some say Abhishek wrongfully took credit for the stunt, others ask why Balram chose to stay silent for six months and decided to speak only a day after the movie's release.

"People, read Abhi's original interview - he clearly said there was a special diver, but he also tried the stunt because he was excited about it!" SnehM blogs. "If Abhishek's taken that poor man's credit, it's unethical," Guro12 tweeted. "I wonder if this stuntman was paid earlier to make the allegations or has now been paid to shut up," asks Bachchanfan56.

Indian Censors Given The Green Signal For Maoist Films

Citing the growing Maoist violence in some states of India as the reason, authorities in New Delhi have refused to allow public screenings of a documentary on Nepal that depicts the Maoist insurgency in this country in a series of uprisings against dictatorship, finally ending in the abolition of monarchy.

New Delhi's Central Board of Film Certification, whose approval is mandatory to screen films in India, has denied permission to "Flames of the snow", a 125-minute documentary directed by New Delhi-based Ashish Srivastava, formerly associated with Discovery channel, and Anand Swaroop Verma, Indian activist and journalist who is close to the Nepal Maoists ideologically.

"The film tells about the Maoist movement in Nepal and justifies its ideology," the board informed Verma, explaining why it had decided to withhold permission.

"In the opinion of the examining committee, any justification or romanticisation of the ideology of extremism or of violence, coercion, intimidation in achieving its objectives would not be in the public interest, particularly keeping in view the recent Maoist violence in some parts of the country."

"It's a case of being more loyal than the masters," Verma told IANS. "The film is about the history of Nepal with Maoist movement being a part of it. It does not contain a single reference to the Maoist movement in India."

The film begins with the founding of the Shah dynasty in 1770 by the first powerful king of the clan, Prithvi Narayan Shah. It covers nearly 250 years of absolute rule, first by the kings and then by the Rana prime ministers, punctuated with people's rebellions and ending with the end of the royal line.

The first notable uprising occurred in 1876 when Lakhan Thapa, a peasant from Gorkha, the same district from where the Shah kings hailed, organised fellow peasants against the atrocities of the Rana rulers.

But the movement was put down with swift brutality and Thapa was hanged, in a move reminiscent of the peasant uprisings against British rule in India.

The pro-democracy movements were then spearheaded by the political parties in 1950 and 1990, finally leading to an armed movement by the Maoists for 10 years from 1996.

The film ends with the formal abolition of monarchy after a historic election in 2008 that also saw the Maoists emerge victorious to head the new government.

"Flames of the snow" produced by a Kathmandu-based human rights organisation, Group for International Solidarity, Nepal, was screened in Kathmandu in April 2008, during the last days of the Maoist government when it was watched by the Maoist top leadership.

It includes an interview with Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, describing the genesis of the armed movement.

"The Censor Board objection is absurd," Verma said. "It means the board will never give its certification to any political film made on Nepal since there can't be any political film on Nepal without mentioning the Maoists, who have now become part of the history of Nepal. When you acknowledge Nepal as a republic, you have to also acknowledge the Maoist movement that led to it."

Verma also says that Nepal's Maoists are no longer an armed party. They took part in the elections in 2008 and led the government till May 2009.

Verma has appealed against the board's decision to the Revising Committee of the board. "I am going to start a campaign and go to the tribunal," Verma told IANS.

The Indian censors' decision comes even as films made on the Maoist movement in India have been given the green signal.

Earlier this year, the Indian Cultural Centre in Kathmandu showed "Hazar chaurasi ki maa", the Govind Nihalani film that is sympathetic to the Naxalite movement of the 1970s, as part of the Indian film festival in Kathmandu.

Next month, Indian film director Ananth Mahadevan's "Red Alert: the War Within", a film focusing on the impact of the armed movement in rural India releases in India.

Shah Rukh Khan's Challenging Driving Lesson Of His Life

Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for the most challenging driving lesson of his life. He will be taught how to drive one of the world’s fastest production cars, the Volkswagen Bugatti, for his forthcoming film Ra.One.

Yes, knowing how to drive isn’t enough; you need special lessons for driving this mean machine. And knowing that SRK is a perfectionist, the teaching session is sure to last a while. The title of the film Ra.One, which is SRK’s most ambitious project till date, is short for “Random Access Version One”.

Shah Rukh plays a superhero called G.One and drives a super fast car. And Shah Rukh would have to perform several different stunts while driving this vehicle. A source from the crew of the film confirms that the decision to drive the Volkswagen Bugatti was Shah Rukh’s. “Shah Rukh is taking most of the decisions on Ra.One by himself.”

The itinerary is in place. The source says, “A team of technicians from The Pirates Of The Caribbean crew is being flown down, to teach Shah Rukh how to drive the car with ease. When you are zipping at a top speed of 407 kilometres per hour your mind cannot afford to drift.

Your concentration needs to be at its best,” add the source. Currently, Shah Rukh is busy holidaying with his family, we are told. “He will be taking his family to South Africa for the FIFA final. From there, he plans to go straight to London for the next schedule of Ra.One.

It is in this schedule that most of the portions using the Volkswagen Bugatti would be shot. As soon as he reaches London, the experts will commence the driving lessons,” says the source.

The Bachchans Are Spending Quality Time In London

While the Bachchans are spending quality time as a family in London, my khabru from their current neighbourhood informs that they can't get over a cheeky journalist's questions at the Raavan red carpet premiere.

My khabru says that the lady asked Aishwarya Rai Bachchan about her director, Mani Ratnam, and she replied, "He's my guru." The lady retorted, "I thought Abhishek was your guru?"

I'm told, even before Ash could think of a smart rejoinder to the query, her witty husband Abhishek Bachchan quipped, "I am The Guru."

Amitabh Bachchan Is Back On Kaun Banega Crorepati

It's official. Amitabh Bachchan is back on Kaun Banega Crorepati that will soon start airing on Sony. But who will fill in for him on Bigg Boss 4 that starts in the last quarter of this year, on Colors? Bachchan was the pop philosopher on the show last season.

The buzz was that it could be Shah Rukh Khan. But according to a well-placed industry source, SRK "has a contract with Star Plus that forbids him from taking on a show on another channel". The next choice is Aamir Khan who has turned down KBC 4, saying "he doesn't have the time for TV shows".

Salman Khan is also supposed to be in the running. His spokesperson doesn't deny the possibility that he's been approached. "But Salman will be doing Dus Ka Dum 3 and the show's format is being tweaked to make it appear fresh. He has assured the channel (Sony) of his cooperation but will start on DKD3 only after he has wrapped up his on going films. That includes his home production Dabbang," says his spokesperson. "At the moment, he's not even thinking of another show."

The reason Bachchan didn't want to continue on Bigg Boss 4 was reportedly because "grilling" the eliminated contestants and analysing the motives behind their sometimes bizarre behaviour in the House, was not the thrill he had expected it to be. The fee, insists a source close to the channel, was not the problem. Now, if either of the Khans don't give Bigg Boss the thumbs up, the channel will probably look at 'younger' options. "They may even be considering returning to Shilpa Shetty."
